The first print run of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was just one thousand copies. It shouldn’t be too much of a surprise to learn that they are now highly sought after.

They very first initial ideas for Harry Potter were written on a napkin while the author was travelling on a train to London.

The original manuscript of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was rejected by no fewer than twelve publishing houses before finally being accepted by Bloomsbury.

Rowling has always had a talent for literature – in fact she used to write stories for her family’s entertainment, penning her first one in 1971 aged just six, entitled Rabbit.

Rowling has stated in an interview that as far as her own works, go, her personal favourite is a tie between Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and The Casual Vacancy.

Jo has said that for a very long time, she wanted to end the whole Harry Potter series with the word ‘scar’, which had been an iconic reference throughout the books. In the end though, she changed her mind and as real fans will remember, finished the final book with the phrase “All was well”.

So why ‘J.K.’ and not simply ‘Jo’? Well, Rowling’s publisher initially suggested that she shouldn’t use her real name for Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone because they didn’t think boys would want to read a book about a wizard that had been written by a woman. It would be nice to think that times have changed since then, as she certainly proved them wrong... although she did take their advice.

Rowling penned two sidekick books to complement the Harry Potter series: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Quidditch Through the Ages. The proceeds from both of these books have so far added up to more than £17 million, and every penny has been donated to the charity Comic Relief.

We are told that the author’s favourite passage from the Harry Potter books is the chapter featuring the Mirror of Erised in Philosopher’s Stone, although the ending of Goblet of Fire is the writing she is most proud of.

When asked which book was the most fun to write, J.K. Rowling said it had to be Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban – which also tends to be many fans’ favourite to read.
